Norfolk Harborfest

A long cruise today from Tangier back to Norfolk.  About 65 miles.  As we got closer to Norfolk, we heard the Coast Guard broadcast a notice on the VHF radio that the Elizabeth River would be closed in Norfolk.  The only way back to where we left our truck and trailer is on the Elizabeth River.  When we got in cell phone range, I called Waterside marina to ask for a slip for the night.  He informed me that this is Harborfest weekend, and they were full.  Typical for this trip.  We were able to find a slip at the Nauticus Museum.

On the way in to Norfolk, we were passed by 5 pretty fast and stealthy looking military craft.

And speaking of stealth, we saw one of the subs going out.

My young friend Bret who is studying to become a railroad engineer should try to find out which third world country these new locos are headed to.  Could be his only chance to find a job.

And we would all feel safer with him "driving that train" in some other country.

Harborfest is a really big shew here in Norfolk.  There's new and old ships, and lots of people.

Some pretty nifty tall ships.

And the Geico Gecko

We hope to make it back to Centerville marina tomorrow where our wonderful Ford truck awaits.  We spoke with Woody and Brenda who we met in Islamorada this winter, and plan to meet them for dinner tomorrow evening.  They live in Chesapeake, VA.
